Since 2008 · 1.3M profiles

Your material, ready on every printer.

Send us an A4 sheet of your material. Our Cortex platform predicts how it prints on all printers, ink sets and print modes in our database, and print shops download the profile they need.

Cortex is the profiling platform developed by ColorBase. For 23 years we made printer profiles by hand in our own lab. We used that work to train a network of models, and Cortex now predicts the results we used to measure and build by hand.

Trained on how ink, material and light interact

Every material takes ink differently. On textile the ink goes into the fibers, on canvas it is held by the coating, and on vinyl it stays close to the surface. Solvent, UV, latex and dye-sublimation inks each build up in their own way.

Light that hits a print partly reflects off the surface and partly passes through the ink, then bounces back from the material underneath. The white of the material, its texture and optical brighteners all change the color you see. Cortex learned these effects from our measurements, so it can predict combinations of printer, ink and material that were never profiled.

Who Cortex is for

Cortex is used by material manufacturers, print shops and RIP software companies.

Material manufacturers

Onboard a material once and it’s available on every printer

  • You no longer need to plan profiling projects or decide which printers get a profile.
  • Once onboarded, your material is available for every printer, RIP and print mode in Cortex.
  • You pay a fixed annual fee per material, or an agreed budget for a larger range.

Profiles for demos and native RIP formats

  • Generate profiles on the fly when you set up a demo.
  • Build native material profiles through our API. Roland VersaWorks, ONYX and Caldera are supported.
  • License our ICC and CTX technology.

Pick how much you want to measure

If a material isn’t onboarded yet, you choose how much of it you measure yourself.

An afternoon

Measure everything

The full target, the traditional way. About 1,600 patches.

4 minutes

A few patches + prediction

Measure a small set of key patches and Cortex predicts the rest. About 60 patches.

0.4 seconds

Full prediction

No measuring device or patches needed. Select the printer, ink and material.

How Cortex builds a profile

Cortex uses a series of models. Each one predicts one part of the profiling process and passes its result on to the next.

  1. Ink limits

How much ink the material can take before it starts to bleed or stops drying properly.

  2. Linearization

How each ink builds up, from the first dot to full coverage.

  3. Spectral prediction

The spectral data needed to build an ICC profile.

  4. ICC or CTX profile

An ICC profile for RGB, CMYK or multi-color output, or a CTX profile, our own format with encryption, version history, licensing and sharing.

  5. RIP material profile

A material profile you can import directly into ONYX, Caldera or Roland VersaWorks, with the ink limits, linearization and ICC profile included.

About us

From profiling lab to software company

ColorBase was founded in 2008 as a sister company of Color Concepts, the world’s largest profiling and test lab for large-format inkjet printing. A profile made by hand took between one and a half and four hours, depending on the printer and material. Our test lab closed, and we now focus entirely on software development.

We would not be here without the manufacturers, print shops and colleagues who have worked with us over the years.

Our goal

Within a few years, sign and large-format print companies should no longer have to deal with color management and profiles.
